Description
Latin America,Spanish Colonial period, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pair of leaded tin retablos hand-painted and fit in custom wooden frames. The larger depicts a lone, haloed figure possibly a young representation of Christ, standing barefoot, draped in a white robe beneath a red chasuble, while holding a globus cruciger in one hand and blessing with the other. HIs chasuble is adorned with symbols of the Arma Christi or the Instruments of the Passion, including a crown of thorns, squares representing dice, the Holy Lance, the Holy Sponge, a hammer, pincers, a bag of money, a pillar, a reed, the Holy Grail, and a flagellum. Alternatively, the other retablo presents the image of the Virgin and Child. Dressed in her traditional red robe and blue mantle, Mary holds Jesus in one arm while grasping a lily stalk - a symbol of her purity - in the other. Size of largest retablo (Saint): 6.7" W x 9.8" H (17 cm x 24.9 cm); with frame: 10.5" W x 13.5" H (26.7 cm x 34.3 cm)
