Item Details
Description
Spanish Colonial, Latin America, Mexico or Guatemala, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A hand-carved and polychromed wooden Cristo (Crucified Christ) that captures the drama and sorrow of this tragedy with a truly graphic depiction, complete with inlaid glass eyes. The anatomy is skillfully delineated with a severely emaciated torso and limbs as blood streams out from his stigmata (the marks indicative of Christ's Crucifixion wounds). Aside for the loincloth, Christ is depicted nude, with as much of his suffering body visible as is possible. Christ's visage with those downturned, glass eyes and slightly parted lips heightens the emotional impact of the piece. Clearly the artisan of this Cristo, while a folk artist, was influenced by theatrical Spanish Baroque depictions of Christ Crucified.
