**First Time At Auction**

New World, Spanish colonial period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fabulous hand-carved wooden stirrup with zoomorphic and geometric motifs and an iron fitting. The stirrup is slightly pyramidal in shape, with the back half opening into hollow cavity for the foot to rest within. The front of the stirrup is carved in relief with floral and animal motifs, possibly foxes, and the sides have geometric forms that run alongside the iron fitting that is riveted to the sides and base for support. The wood has developed a lovely smooth patina over the ages. These hefty wooden stirrups were often preferred over simpler styles, because they cover the whole foot and protect the rider in rugged terrain. Size: 5.5" L x 5.5" W x 7.125" H (14 cm x 14 cm x 18.1 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950 to 1990
