Description
Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial period, ca. 20th century CE. A beautiful tin retablo featuring the Virgin Mary crowned and holding a scepter as she holds her hands together in prayer. She is dressed in lavish clothing with deep blue robes and a red cape with fur trimmings, as well as gold bracelets, a pearl necklace, and dangling earrings. Behind her, Christ is shown crucified on an altar. All is delineated in brilliant pigments with remarkable attention to detail. Size of retablo: 9.5" W x 13.5" H (24.1 cm x 34.3 cm); of frame: 12.75" W x 16.75" H (32.4 cm x 42.5 cm)
