COLLECTION OF SPECTACLES AND VISION ACCESSORY
Seven pieces. Includes 'Ben Franklin' oval split lens bifocal spectacles in wire frame, circa 1870. Gold finished with octagonal lenses and straight temples, circa 1880. Gold finished rimless with Kryptok bifocal lenses and cable temples, circa 1930. Reading spectacles with oval lenses, saddle bridge and cable temples, circa 1890. Hang-on readers spectacles, circa 1910. "BERKELEY" white metal spectacles with circular lenses, nose pads and riding bow temples, circa 1915. The last a gold finished retractable pin chain for pince-nez specs.

From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.

Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
