THREE TORTOISESHELL FRAME SPECTACLES
Chinese, early 19th century. One with shaped metal bridge to the oval frames holding amber lenses. Another showing Chinese markings a top the angular bridge with circular lenses and hinged temples in a worn case. The last with angular bridge, circular lenses and hinged temples.
From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.
Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
