THREE SPECTACLES
Chinese, 19th to 20th century. One folding with circular horn rims (one lens loose) in a custom cylindrical case, circa 1840. Another in brass frame with engraved C bridge and near-circular lenses with folding temples, circa 1875. The last in brass frame with oval lenses and folding temples in embroidered case, early 20th century.
From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.
Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
