Description
FOUR PAIR OF CHINESE SPECTACLES
Chinese, late 18th to early 19th century. All with circular lenses and brass bridges, three with horned rims, the last pair rimless with tortoiseshell nose pad circa 1760.

From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.

Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
