Federal Mahogany and Mahogany Veneer Tall Case Clock, Samuel Martin (fl. 1801-20), New York, New York, c. 1805. Hood with molded swan's neck crest terminating in scrolls with applied brass rosettes, arched molding above glazed tombstone door opening onto conforming gilt polychrome dial, the tympanum painted to depict an American ship in harbor and spandrels decorated with allegories of the four seasons, with seconds hand and calendar aperture, fitted to weight-driven eight-day brass movement with seconds hand and date aperture, all over waisted case with cross-banded arched door centering a veneered oval, the sides with three-quarter-engaged reeded columns, resting on base with similar geometric inlay raised on slightly flaring cut-out feet, old surface to case and dial (shrinkage crack in top of door), including finial, 53cm wide, 25cm deep, 243cm high (21 1/4in wide, 10in deep, 96in high).
