Item Details

Description

American, New York, first half of 19th century. A mahogany and mahogany veneer tall case clock, the astragal-shaped hood decorated by three conical spires, the uppermost spire resting on a plinth, the framed circular glass door enclosing brass clock face, overall flanked by small decorative Doric columns, the waist section comprising of an upper molded plinth and architrave decorated with highly figured mahogany veneer, the central glass door in the form of a Gothic arch, enclosing eight-day works with two weights and circular brass pendulum, the door surmounting a decorative molded rectangular molding comprising of cross-banded mahogany crotch veneer, the waist overall flanked by conforming decorative Doric columns, all joined by a cyma-curved waist molding surmounting a base section decorated with two veneered Gothic arches of bookmatched mahogany crotch veneer, all over a shaped apron on French feet. Approximate height 83.25" width 20", depth 10.5". Provenance: From the Estate of Sam & Florence Inman, Atlanta, Georgia.

Condition

Overall very good condition. Glass insert to trunk later. Working condition movement with highly unusual dial with typical oxidation to surface (see image #5). There are scattered repairs/patches to veneer - not distracting. The base has a vertical crack center (see image #8) as well as left front leg not affecting stability or balance.
