Ulysses S. Grant in Uniform Striking Large Albumen Photo After Mathew Brady
A striking portrait of Civil War military commander Ulysses S. Grant (1821-1885) wearing his general's uniform, after an original photograph taken by Mathew Brady. N.d. but probably a mid- to late-nineteenth century. N.p. The sepia-colored albumen print is affixed to a thick stock mount. Expected wear including minor scuffs and superficial marks including one just touching Grant's left shoulder. Some mat burn verso. Else near fine, with a crisp level of detail. The photograph measures 6.75" x 8.25" while the mount is trimmed to an overall size of 7.375" x 9."
Mathew Brady (1822-1896) photographed Grant on several occasions, both in the studio and on Civil War battlefields. Brady dominated antebellum and Civil War-era American photography. An established photographer, Brady became even more well-known for his celebrity photographs and his gruesome battlefield photographs.
Ulysses S. Grant served as 18th U.S. President between 1869-1877.
