Description
JAMES G. BLAINE (1830-1893) American politician, a two-time Secretary of State. Partly-printed D.S. ‘J. G. Blaine’, 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p., 188[?]], fine content Western Union telegram to the secretary of the Mayor of New York. In part: ‘...Inform...the mayor that the remains of the President will not be taken to N.Y. Thank him for his courtesy...’. At the top right of the document is a green stamp reading 'West End Hotel...Long Branch'. After Garfield was shot, he spent a painful two months deteriorating in the White House. Due to his love of the sea, it was eventually decided to move him to Elberon, New Jersey, which he had visited before. Garfield eventually succumbed to his injuries a few short weeks later. Very good to fine. Presented in a 9 x 7 in. black frame with gilt trim. Blaine served as Secretary of State from 1881-1885 under President James Garfield and his successor President Chester Arthur.
