(1865-1950), son of President James A. Garfield, former Secretary of the Interior, attorney, and partner at Garfield, Cross, Daoust & Vrooman. Typed cover letter signed ("James R. Garfield"), addressed to Mary A. Pool. Cleveland, OH, 18 December 1939. 1 page, 7 3/4 x 8 1/2 in., "Law Offices of Garfield, Cross, Daoust, Baldwin & Vrooman" letterhead, folds. Garfield conveys his father's signature cut from a cancelled check. [With:] GARFIELD, Harry Augustus (1863-1942), son of President James A. Garfield, attorney, academic, and partner at Garfield, Cross, Daoust & Vrooman. Typed letter signed ("H.A. Garfield"), addressed to Miss Mary Atwood. Washington, DC, 17 November 1936. 1 page, 5 3/8 x 8 1/2 in., "1529 New Hampshire Avenue, Washington, DC" letterhead, folds. Garfield acknowledges Miss Atwood's letter of 12 November 1936, requesting an autograph of his father, promising to send her one if possible.[Also with:] BRYAN, William Jennings (1860-1925). Congressman, three-time presidential candidate, Secretary of State and winning lawyer in Scopes trial. Personal check signed ("W.J. Bryan"). Miami, FL, 6 November 1923. 8 1/2 x 3 in. partially printed check drawn on the Bank of Biscayne. Payable to who appears to be "Albert L. Isaacs" for the sum of $43.12 (multiple ink stamps and paper/stamp residue on verso, small chip near lower right corner).Together, 4 items. Provenance: Descended directly in the family of Mary Atwood Pool (1914-2009). Washington, DC, resident Mary Atwood Pool began collecting autographs of notable American historical figures at the age of 14, with each autograph acquired by her direct communication with the historical figure, their staff, family members, or attorneys.
