Description
Bonnie Schewkes (American, d. 2016) two decorative domestic room dioramas featuring ballet and Shakespearian themes, the larger work signed to reverse. The dioramas are ready to hang and set under glass. Bonnie Schewkes was a New York artist who began to make dioramas at a young age. After attending Brooklyn College, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree, she started her own antique, decorating, and diorama shop in Brooklyn in 1972. This continued until 1988. Subsequently she worked with the New York Metropolitan Opera Company making dioramas based on a number of operas, including Bizet's Carmen, Puccini's Butterfly, and Verdi's La Traviata.
