Description
Day of the Dead - Doll In Red Mexico

Large and early (1965) painting by well-listed Mexican artist, Eduardo Zamora (born 1942).

Depicting an abstracted figure dressed in a red shawl, wearing a Day of the Dead mask and a rose in her black hair. This is a an early example of Eduardo Zamoras work and and the influences of Rufino Tamayo and David Alfaro Siqueiros can be seen.

Oil on the smooth side of a masonite panel. Framed.

Painting: 29.5" x 39.5" (75 cm x 100 cm)

Frame: 31" x 41" (79 cm x 104 cm)

Signed and dated by the artist, lower left. Numbers and notations on the reverse.

Provenance: Los Angeles estate collection.

CONDITION: Good condition with no restoration or in-painting. No crazing or paint loss. Several very small nail holes to the very edges and corners original to the work ~ paint is in the holes. The gold leafed shadow-box is in good condition with light wear to the gold leaf in places.

NOTES / REFERENCES: Eduardo Zamora. Born in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico in 1942. Eduardo Zamora studied art at the Nacional de Artes Plasticas of Mexico and at the Academy of Graphic Arts of Kracow (Poland). During the 1960s he lived and painted in Mexico, moving to Paris in 1973.

In 1983 several young artists formed Magie-Image, a cluster of avant garde Hispanic painters. The talent of these painters attracted the attention of the famous Chilean surrealist, Roberto Matta, who served as their advisor and spiritual leader. The exhibition of the group brought together 29 original works by members of this circle, including Saul Kaminer, Eduardo Zamora, Carlos Aresti, Heriberto Cogollo and Roberto Matta himself.
