Description
Oil on wood panel. Framed.
Signed twice: lower left, inscribed into the paint while wet and lower right, painted. Circa 1890-1900.
Painting: 6 1/4" x 10 1/2" x 3/16" (16 cm x 27 cm x .25 cm)
Frame: 10 1/4" x 15" x 1 3/4" (26 cm x 38 cm x 4.5 cm)
PROVENANCE: San Francisco estate.
CONDITION: Good condition. No damage or restoration noted. Four tiny surface nail holes in the corners (do not extend through the panel). Ornate period frame has been re-painted during the early 20th century, with wear and very minor losses to the plaster decoration.
NOTES / REFERENCES: Albert Dagnaux (1861-1933). Born in Paris in 1861. His father was the owner of a small restaurant "Le Dagnaux" in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. Albert Dagnaux began his studies in 1878 at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts under Professor Ernest Victor Hareux. His first exhibition was in 1883, at the Salon.
In 1890, he left the Salon to join the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, founded by Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier. At that time that he began to receive positive critical attention. His first major success came in 1893 with his tableau Avenue du Bois de Boulogne - Le Club des Pannes. Dagnaux exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1900).
With studios on Rue Saint Didier, in Paris, Albert Dagnaux will address many themes throughout his career, the nude, the portrait and the landscape, in which he excels. Most of his landscapes are made on site, en plein aire, after choosing the site of his painting with great attention.
Albert Dagnaux died in Mantes-la-Jolie in 1933 after having devoted his entire career, from the age of 17, to painting.
