Description
Plains Indian. Lakota or possibly Sioux Umbilical Cord Beaded Fetish in the shape of a lizard. Because of the shape of this item it contains a boys umbilical cord. These were given to show the connection to the child to the womb. Alternately it is sometimes used to ward off evil spirits- which may explain the cross in the design. This one is decorated in a lay stitch style. Item measures 5 1/4-inches-long x 1 5/8-inch-wide (not including tassels). It is displayed in a 14 1/2-inch x 8-inches case. Estimated based on design and color to be from 1890's , however exact age & tribe are unknow. Great find in good vintage condition. See photos.
