Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1200 to 1300 CE. A Tularosa pottery vessel with a zoomorphic head protruding from just below the rim. The surface is slipped in an ashen white hue and painted with black geometric, triangular, and zigzag motifs. The animal may represent an ungulate such as a pronghorn or bighorn sheep, or perhaps a dog. Pottery played an important role in Anasazi culture and included both utilitarian and decorative pieces that could be traded with neighboring communities for food or other goods. Anasazi pottery was made by hand coiling clay, then smoothing the surface and painting with designs before firing. Size: 5" Diameter x 6" H (12.7 cm x 15.2 cm)
