Ca. AD 100-300.A silver phalera formed as a lion's mask within a circular frame. The animal's head with prominent brow and eyes, an open mouth, and a detailed mane framing the face. The phalera is the sculptured disk on the breastplate, which was worn by Roman soldiers as a reward for outstanding service, or as a representation of military rank. Size: 110mm x 110mm; Weight: 75g Provenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.
