Description
Ca. AD 100-300 .An iron shield umbo with a dome base that is conjoined with a flat, linear rim for attachment to a shield. A long, cylindrical handle protrudes from the centre. The umbo grip is formed of a cylindrical shaped rod, with two attached, flattened sheets which gently taper, the centre pierced with a single nail on each side. A shield boss provided protection for the hand, as well as a solid area for knocking the enemy. For a similar example, see TheAshmolean Museum, accession Number: AN1884.513.
