Description
West Africa, Niger Delta, Mali, Djenne peoples, Middle Niger Civilization, ca. 15th century CE. A charming pottery feline of a unique, stylized form, standing upon 4 elongated feet as its smiling face projects forward. Tail curling upward from his posterior, the animal displays an anthropomorphic nose flanked by a pair of recessed, rectangular eyes and a slender mouth. Petite stamped triangles adorn the surface, forming a reptilian shape on the neck and back as well as enveloping the limbs. Size: 3.6" L x 8.6" W x 5.9" H (9.1 cm x 21.8 cm x 15 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.

Condition
Professionally repaired with restoration over break lines and to tips of ears; all done very well and difficult to notice. Minor chipping to tail and nicks and abrasions to surface, commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent presentation with light earthen deposits in areas. TL holes to underside of back right paw and beneath chin.
