Item Details
Description
Central Africa, Gabon, Kota peoples, Mahongwe group, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An interesting finial of an abstract anthropomorphic figure skillfully carved from wood and almost completely covered with thin brass panels that contain incised and stippled decorations. The overall shape is like a spade, with a wooden handle or neck that is attached to broad elongated head with a stylized visage that is comprised of bulging eyes made of brass bosses, a nasal ridge. An elaborate headdress with a crescent top and side flanges protrudes from the top and sides and a tubular neck supports the oversized head. A separate iron ring necklace encircles the neck as additional ornamentation just above the forked lower bust area. This is a reliquary figure, an important ritual piece for the Kota peoples that would protect the spirits of their ancestors, and these figures were often placed with the deceased as gestures of reverence. Size: 7.5" L x 1.25" W x 18" H (19 cm x 3.2 cm x 45.7 cm); 20" H (50.8 cm) on included custom stand.
