Description

James Garfield Archive Incl. Rare End-of-Civil-War-Dated ALS

James A. Garfield (1831-1881). An archive of six pieces, the highlight being a rare war-dated letter signed by future 20th U.S. President, then an Ohio Congressman.

The lot is comprised of:

1.) Autograph Letter Signed, "J. A. Garfield", 1p, on watermarked "Windsor" stationery, once probably bifold but crisply sheared along the edge, 7.75" x 9.75", Hiram, Portage County, Ohio, March 28, 1865. Expected wear including flattened paper folds and a few isolated minor closed tears along these folds. Minor scattered discoloration and edge darkening. Some pencil underlining and partial erasures by a former collector. Else in near fine condition and very legible.

Garfield wrote this letter to Colonel James Allen Hardie (1823-1876) requesting that he sign and send along a permit previously signed by General William T. Sherman to recipient William Ransom Tolles (1823-1893) of Burton Geauga County, Ohio. Tolles was a Civil War veteran who had been involved in recruiting, like Garfield, and who currently lived in part of Garfield's congressional territory, the 19th district of Ohio. In part: "Enclosed please find a permit from Gen Sherman allowing Col W. R. Tolles to visit Savanna Ga. I am well acquainted with the Col - He is a resident of this Dist. and served with distinction in the army - from which he resigned in consequence of being disabled in the service - I respectfully request you endorse his permit and send it to his address..."

2.) A handsome portrait engraving after publisher Selmar Hess with facsimile signature measuring 7" x 9.5". Lightly toned at edges. In fine condition.

3.) A carte-de-visite photograph of Lucretia Garfield (1832-1918) titled "Mrs. James A. Garfield" at bottom margin. 2.375" x 3.875". Blank verso. Light creases and surface imperfections. Corner and edge wear. In near fine condition.

4.) A carte-de-visite photograph of the President and Mrs. Garfield. 2.5" x 4.125". Blank verso. Very light wear. In fine condition.

5.) A carte-de-visite photograph of the Garfield home. 4" x 2.5". Photographer's backstamp. Pencil notations from a previous collector at verso. Light toning and some surface imperfections. In near fine condition.

6.) A Stanhope in the shape of a miniature telescope, picturing a memorial collage of images of Garfield "From the Cradle to the Grave", and measuring .75". With a short hanging chain and blue plastic split ring to attach to a keyring or wear as a charm. A unique and rare piece of Garfield memorabilia, in excellent condition.
