Fossilized Jurassic Pinecone & Nautilus Shell Fragment
Item Details
Description
South America, Argentina, Mid Jurassic to Cretaceous 174.1 to 66 million years ago; Ancient Seas, Late Jurassic to Miocene, ca. 161 to 5 million years ago. An incredible fossilized pine cone from a prehistoric pine tree (possibly Araucaria spp.) and a large fragment of a fossilized Eeutrephoceras, an extinct nautilus. Fossilized pine cones come from coniferous tree species that dates back millions of years, and offer a fascinating insight into the Earth's prehistoric flora, due to their amazing preservation. Araucaria cones are made of a durable, woody material that is naturally resistant to decay, and tough outer scales can withstand the test of time, making them more likely to fossilize intact! Eeutrephoceras are notable for their globular shells- this specimen is a fragment that is as if the shell was cut horizontally across, revealing the interior chambers and the outer curve has been polished to bring out the colors- there is nice iridescence in the septa lines! Size of pinecone: 3.5" L x 3" W (8.9 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private Constance McCormick Fearing estate, Montecito, California, USA, acquired before 2004
