Fine Ammonite Fossil in Freestanding Matrix
Fine Ammonite Fossil in Freestanding Matrix
Item Details
Description
North America, western United States, Upper Cretaceous, ca. 86 to 66 million years ago. A beautiful horned ammonite fossil with a pearlescent shimmer, partially excavated from the gray stone matrix surrounding. The shell not only fossilized, but also formed an opalescent surface due to the presence of aragonite. The ribbed exterior and rows of nubbin protrusions indicates this is an ammonite in the Discoscaphites genus, which lived in the Western Interior Seaway that once covered parts of North America. The surrounding stone concretion contains impressions and fragments from other prehistoric shells and marine organisms. The matrix has been cut flat to create a free-standing display. Size of stone matrix: 6" L x 3.5" W x 3.75" H (15.2 cm x 8.9 cm x 9.5 cm); fossil: 2" Diameter (5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Van Buskirk collection, Tucson, Arizona USA
