Plat rond en porcelaine de Meissen provenant du « Japanisches Palais », circa 1730

A Meissen circular dish from the Japanese Palace, circa 1730

Painted in Kakiemon style with a phoenix in flight and flowering branches issuing from banded hedges, 22cm diam., crossed swords mark in blue enamel, incised Japanese Palace inventory number N=69/ W
Footnotes:
Provenance:
The Royal Collections of Saxony, Japanese Palace, Dresden, delivered in April 1731

One of the copies of a Japanese dish made for the French merchant Rudolph Lemaire around 1730; a Japanese dish in the collection of Augustus the Strong, now in the Dresden porcelain collection (inv. PO 5252) may have served as the model. Fourteen lobed and sixty-three circular dishes of various sizes decorated with this pattern were among the porcelain for Lemaire that was confiscated in April 1731 from the Dresden palace of Count Hoym and moved to the Elector/King's Japanese Palace (entered in the inventories under nos. 41-44 and 66-69).

In 1770, the same number of pieces were recorded in the inventory of the Japanese Palace, including under no. 69: 'Eilf Stück detto [runde tiefe Schaalen, inwendig mit Vögeln, Blumen und bunten Korn gemahlt], differenter Größe, zu 9 1/2. Zoll tief [probably 1 1/2 Zoll], 9. Zoll in Diam:' (11 pieces ditto [round deep dishes, painted inside with birds, flowers und coloured corn], various sizes, to [1 1/2] zoll deep, 9 zoll diam.).

Two similar dishes are in the Dr. Ernst Schneider Collection in Schloss Lustheim (published by J. Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, II (2013), cat. nos. 202 and 203; another was sold from the Hoffmeister Collection by Bonhams London, 26 May 2010, lot 28.
