Description
Cabinet card portrait of Pawnee Eagle Chief Ray-tah-cots-tey-sah-ru. [Pawnee, Oklahoma].
A striking portrait of the Pawnee chief holding a pipe tomahawk and wearing a bone necklace with a medallion. He dons a distinctive fur headdress, described Fletcher and LaFlesche as a type of head gear, "was worn only be chiefs; it bore the name watha'ge." (The Omaha Tribe, 1911, p. 354). The subject identification comes from an inscription on another copy of the portrait held at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas (P1967.2499).
