Description

A Costa Rican terracotta vase or effigy vessel. Pre-Columbian era, ca. 1250–1500 AD. The piece is made up of the head, legs, and tail of a jaguar affixed to a jug. The placement of the jaguars legs makes it appear to be sitting like a human, with the tail being used to support the figure. Sculpted details, hand-painted red and black ornaments. Jaguar was believed to be a god of the underworld by Native American cultures. The jaguar effigy vessels were used to represent a deceased person. Collectible Ceramics And Pottery, Ancient American Historical Relics.
