Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica/Nicaragua, Nicoya Peninsula, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. This is a large pottery urn with a bulbous body, a wide opening at the top, and rounded tripod rattle legs. The body of the urn is meant to be the body of an animal; three-dimensional elements add the front legs and head. The animal is clearly a coati, with its distinctive black facial markings. The feet are painted, while the exterior rim is ringed with abstract animal figures, maybe the mythical earth monster known from Costa Rica at this time. Nicoya Polychrome is one of the most impressive and important types of pottery from ancient Latin America. Animal effigy jars like this one are common and are a fabulous representation of pre-Columbian vessels and creative artwork. Size: 7.75" W x 9.25" H (19.7 cm x 23.5 cm)
