Description
An excellent Nicoya Jaguar urn from Costa Rica, ca. 1000 - 1500 AD. This gorgeous Pataki Polychrome zoomorphic effigy vessel is 11-1/2 in high and depicts a standing jaguar, with large fangs in the open mouth and the tail forming the third leg of the tripod. The upper portion of the pear-shaped chamber is decorated with bands composed of various elements of the characteristic man-jaguar theme, including a stylized jaguar with claws, feathered headdress, spears, etc. The legs, arms, tail and bib surrounding the head are decorated with stylized jaguar heads. The legs and head are hollow and contain rattles. Heavy mineral deposits. Ex Florida estate. Cf. 'Art of Costa Rica', page 169 for similar from the Sackler Collection.
