Description
An Important and Rare Caryatid Stool, Ngbaka or Related People Northern Democratic Republic of Congo/Tanzania, First half of the 20th century Hardwood (ironwood or ebony) stained a glossy black. A male and female figure back to back, each with raised pointed shoulders, arms and hands carved out and down sides, the male with necklace of small blue glass beads. In very good condition, 1 ½ inch chip from rim of seat, numerous chips along bottom edge, high points of bodies rubbed. Such stools also functioned as altars for devotional and ancestor worship.
