Description
**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Northwestern United States, Northern California, Mission type, ca. early 20th century CE. A fabulous basket that is hand-woven from natural grass fibers in a deep ovoid form resembling a boat like a canoe, with tucked stitching along the underside suggestive of Mission-type weaving. Each rounded end features a standing female figure while each longer side bears a pair of standing quails, each figure without a head; the heads were perhaps on a lid that accompanied the vessel at one time. A hallmark of Northwestern California basketry are the nearly perfectly trimmed rims and the precision of the designs. Size: 8.5" L x 5" W x 3" H (21.6 cm x 12.7 cm x 7.6 cm)
Cf. The Penn Museum, object number NA8237.
