Description
Native American, Western United States, California, Pomo culture, ca. 1920s to 1930s CE. A hand-made basket decorated with feathers and shell beads, the body coiled and twined from regional plants - sedge grass, fern root, willow, and/or bracken. The quail topknot feathers are evenly spaced around the exterior and rim with groups of 4 beads, and poking through the entire surface are orange-red feathers from woodpeckers. The addition of this ornamentation separates this beautiful piece from utilitarian examples. Such baskets were traditionally used in ceremonial contexts or given as special gifts. Size: 10" Diameter x 4.5" H (25.4 cm x 11.4 cm)
