Description
Pair of African Bamana Chiwara Antelope Headdresses. This male and female pair stands 46 and 44 inches tall, with real hair tassels cascading from the tips of their horns. These objects are well-known to collectors of African Art due to their powerful presence and beauty. The term “Chi wara” denotes a cult, divine power and a farming association at one and the same time. The cult reveals the presence of a healing power, supervising farming activities, which appears in the form of a pair of masked dancers. The festivities celebrate the manifestation in the world of men of the mythical animal which taught them how to farm. This animal does not correspond to any known species, but rather is a composite creature made up of the features of antelopes and other creatures. During ritual dances, a Bamana performer wears the headdress on their head, with a black raffia cape underneath that covers them from head to foot. Provenance: ex-NYE & Company auction (NJ).
