Description
Silk Ikat Shoulder Cloth, Sumatra, Indonesia 19th C. Silk and gold-wrapped thread. Size: 82'' x 33'', 208 x 84 cm (textile). This shoulder cloth was made in Palembang, South Sumatra. The central ground was woven with weft-dyed silk ikat with images that perhaps represent a boat, double-winged Garuda, or designs the weaver may have seen on carpets imported from the middle east. This shoulder cloth would likely have been worn by a Palembang woman.
