(8vo) 23.5x14 cm (9¼x5½"), finely bound in early 19th century calf, borders stamped in gilt and blind, gilt-decorated spines with raised bands, gilt dentelles, endpapers and edges marbled.The verso of both title leaves with the small red round library stamp, "ex bibliotheca fideicomm. Enesti Aug.," indicating the volumes were once part of the estate of Ernest Agustus I, King of Hanover and Duke of Cumberland (1771-1851), an uncle of Queen Victoria. Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674) was an English statesman, historian, and maternal grandfather of two English monarchs, Queen Mary II and Queen Anne. He fought for the royalists in the English Civil War, going into exile as the guardian of the Prince of Wales. He returned to England following the restoration, and assumed high office, but fell from grace and once again was forced into exile. A handsomely bound set of this scarce edition.

Condition
Some rubbing to joints and edges, small chip to top of rear board of vol. 1 at spine; book plates removed from front pastedowns, with small abraded areas, toning to endpaper edges and blanks at front and rear; very good or better.
