Item Details
Description
Japanese Porcelain Vase: Ito Tozan I (Japanese 1846-1920) probably 19th century in date, is a finely potted vase decorated with underglaze and overglaze techniques. Shi-shi lions frolic among peonies and vines, mostly painted on an cream colored Satsuma style base. One Shi-shi was painted under the glaze with cobalt blue. The neck is decorated with pink peony blossoms set against a green geometric ground. The finely rendered decorative techniques demonstrates the artist's versatility and talent. The base bears his stamped seal. The Awasebako lid is inscribed on the top; seals are stamped on the reverse side of the lid. His work was widely acclaimed during his life time and exhibited in many World Fairs during the 1890s. His work is included in many museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Kyoto National Museum of Art.
