Description
Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Ando Suzuri-bako (Writing Box), probably early 20th century in date, represents the cloisonne Ando factory located near Nagoya. Ando Jubei (1876-1956) was one of the best cloisonne artisans in the late 19th century. This antique metal writing box is designed with a domed lid (recalling 10th-11th century lacquer writing boxes) accented with chrysanthemums in relief on the lid. The surface is further tamped to soften the design.. A water dropper on the interior is decorated with the same chrysanthemum motif. The writing box comes with a tomobako with inscribed lid.
