Description
Japanese Lacquer Suzuribako Writing Box, probably late 19th-early 20th century in date, boosts a decorative scheme recalling the Kamo River Festival scene in the literary classic, The Tale of Genji. The section in the narrative is often symbolized by a single cart representing the battle of carriages between Prince Genji's love rivals. The lone cart, created in gold and silver set against a soft black background with sprinklings of fine gold (maki-e technique), occupies the front of the box. The interior (of lid and box) continues the Kamo River theme with wave patterns on both surfaces. A bridge crosses the water on the interior of the lid. The surfaces are richly ornamented with sprinkled gold (maki-e) over a dark ground. Raden, mother of pearl inlay, highlights the blossoms on the interior lid. The water dropper is in the shape of leaves. The writing box comes with a tomobako with inscriptions on lid.
