Description
Fine Double Lozenge shaped Japanese Lacquer Incense Box (kobako), probably 18th century in date, is an exquisite example of Japanese lacquer artistry. The shape is a double-lozenge; a single tray is inside the box. The top of the lid is decorated with a bonzai planter on one side and dragons and rabbits in a tortoise shell grid pattern on the other side. Poses of the rabbit vary within the allover pattern. The exterior surface of the box features a village landscape by a stream with a pagoda perched on a nearby mountain. Pine, willow and plum accent the mountain landscape. All the motifs are created with gold and silver in relief set against a black lacquer ground. The interior of the lid continues the lakeside imagery with a flock of geese and pair of ducks. The water's ripple pattern forms a consistent band across the surface. The lacquer box sits on a wooden box of the same shape that serves as a base and additional storage space. A painting of trees by water is freely brushed on the base. The incense box and wrapper comes with a tomobako .
