Description
Japanese Porcelain Vase was created by Makuzu Kozan II (Japanese 1859-1940) in the early 20th century. Finely potted, it is decorated with a pair of frolicking Shi-Shi lions painted in cobalt blue against a yellow ground. Shi-Shi lions, protective symbols, were popular motifs throughout Asia. The dynamic energy of the mythological beasts dominates the vase, painted only on one side. The handles, also painted with cobalt blue, have an animated quality. A band of stylized lotus petals encircles the neck. The vase comes with a tomobako with inscriptions on the lid.
