Item Details
Description
A tall carved wooden male effigy with what appears to be slave shackles carved onto the feet. The sculpture of a Yoruba male has classic facial features, ceremonial cap, kaolin clay accented around the eyes and a well handled surface. What is unusual are the shackles around the ankles, suggesting a slave or prisoner. Note that the shackles are eroded and not complete, but what remains is stable and evidence of a skilled craftsman, perhaps trying to portray a slave in bondange. The idol measures 19 inches tall ( 20.75 inches on custom display stand) Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, West Africa. Provenance: The estate of critically acclaimed essayist and novelist Joan Didion (1934-2021) New York
