Description
This is an exceedingly rare wood sculpture from the BanguBangu, a remote ethnic group living in the eastern Congo, and like their neighbors the Luba , they create wooden idols for the worship of their ancestors. This kneeling male figure has a serene face and style, his one hand in a open gesture of offering. A rare example that measures 10.25 inches tall. A small cavity at the top of the head suggests there may have been a horn or headdress of some type inserted at one time. Provenance: Ex Sol and Josephine Levitt, New York; Purchased in Brussels, C. 1982
