Description
A Tall slender carved wooden shrine idol, likely a 19th century example or earlier. The sculpture is shown with hands to the air in an act of prayer to the star sirius, possibly for rain. There is a Nommo cult among the Dogon with a rich and complex history that is worth researching. The Idol shows much wear and handling, loss to end of one arm, a deeply patinated surface suggests many years of ritual use. The figure measures 27 inches tall ( 29.5 inches tall on professional display stand) Dogon peoples, Mali, Africa. Provenance: The estate of critically acclaimed essayist and novelist Joan Didion (1934-2021) New York
