Helen Stephenson Bixby (American, late 19th Century). Still Life, Vase of Flowers. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right CIRCA 1885. Dimensions: 12” x 16”; housed in original frame: 15.5” x 19”. Condition: Fair. For a woman artist such as Helen Bixby flower painting was quickly mastered both in the studio setting and at home. A member of the Boston Art Club for a time, she exhibited there at least one year. Unfortunately, she enters the annals of women artists who are trained, exhibit briefly and then go onto family duties. During her active period she is listed in the Boston Art Club 1855 – 1950 publication in 2000 and Who Was Who in American Art. Painting still-life for an artist became an important test of their observational powers and ability to create vigorous, life affirming works of art. Still life became a favorite subject matter for 19th century American painters and continues to be popular today among contemporary artists. During the 19th century compositions of flowers and fruits were frequent entries in the local Providence Art Club exhibitions and overseas at the Paris Salon. This painting is from the Thomas and Teresa Russell collection of overlooked American region artists assembled in the 1970’s.
