Description
Bessie Jeanette Howard (1890-1962). "Cape Ann Harbor Boats". Oil on board. Signed lower right. Dimensions: 6" x 8". Framed: 11" x 14". This is a very detailed and picturesque harbor scene most likely of the Cape Ann, New England coastline. Howard was a Boston based painter who enjoyed the Rockport and Cape Ann area for summer retreats. Bessie Howard was a portrait painter and restoration expert born in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. She spent most of her career in the Boston area, where she studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and in Paris with Eben Comins. During World War II, she worked in military hospitals, making pencil portraits for wounded service men to send to their families. She was a member of the Copley Society, Boston Art Club, and the National Association of Pen Women. Her papers, sketchbooks, photographs, letters, and clippings are in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. (Courtesy of Bakker Auctions)
