Description
Florence Leif (1913-1968). "Belgrade Lake", 1966. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. Dimensions: 26 1/2" x 32". Framed: 32" x 42". The talented Florence Leif came onto the national painting scene in her 20’s and went on to artistic recognition on a national front. As she left behind her realistic renderings of the 1950’s, Leif developed a very strong European modernist style. There is a mystery and magical quality to her 1960’s Belgrade Lake series with these sublime women against a dark and brooding lake landscape. Belgrade Lake is in the Kennebec Valley region of Maine & is known for its fresh water fishing & recreation. Leif had a family estate in the area & painted a series of lake scenes in the 1960s. The Providence Journal art critic reviewed this series as her most accomplished body of work at the time. This often overlooked Providence School woman artist is revered by past RISD colleagues and the present faculty. Her premature death cut short a brilliant art career. A scholarship in her name continues to this day at RISD and her works are well represented in the collections of the RISD Museum, the Newport Art Museum and the Providence Art Club.
