Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on canvas board, done in the modern style of artist Piet Mondrian (Dutch, 1872-1944). This charming image depicts a De Stijl composition in shades of black, white, and primary color. Full of vibrancy; a vital and singular addition to any collection. En verso is the name "Mondrian" along with "P.M." and the date of "41". Piece is executed in the modern art style for which Mondrian is so well known. Sight dimensions = 11.5" x 14.5" -- Framed dimensions = 15.5" x 18.5"
Piet Mondrian (Dutch, 1872-1944) held an enormous influence over 20th century art, forever changing the course of the abstract and minimalist art movements. He was a theorist and an educator whose personal work was a direct response to the nature and events that surrounded him.
Said Mondrian, "I construct lines and color combinations on a flat surface, in order to express general beauty with the utmost awareness. Nature (or, that which I see) inspires me, puts me, as with any painter, in an emotional state so that an urge comes about to make something, but I want to come as close as possible to the truth and abstract everything from that, until I reach the foundation (still just an external foundation!) of things..."
Mondrian lived and worked across Europe, eventually settling in New York toward the end of his illustrious life. His linear paintings, modern design sensibilities, and contributions to abstraction are immortal testaments to the genius he possessed.
