Item Details
Description
This lot consists of a mixed media (oil and gouache/watercolor) on what appears to be canvas or canvas board. Painting is done in the modern style of artist Frida Kahlo (Mexican, 1907-1954). "Frida Kahlo" is hand written at bottom right of painting. This beautifully detailed image portrays an indigenous woman. The figure is dressed in traditional garb and tattooed with various abstractions and symbols. Her woven necklaces fall freely across her bare breasts. She is adorned with the traditional jewelry for which she had such a penchant, as well as the full eyebrow hair she played up in her work. This masterpiece is a testament to the vibrancy and raw talent for which Kahlo is so well known. This beautiful painting would be a highlight in any modern art collector's gallery. Overall framed dimensions measure 22" x 18.5" / Image sight measures approximately 15" x 11.5".

Paper label affixed en verso is some type of affidavit from the "NATIONAL REVENUE CANADA Customs and Excise". The label lists the previous owner as "Victor Dowler" and the artist as "Frida Kahlo". The label also includes various hand written notes along with an official date stamp of "June 29th 1957".

Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 in Mexico City. Her real name was Magdalena Carmen Frida Calderon; she was the daughter of a German Jewish father and a Mexican mother. She lived her adult life in the shadow of her husband, Diego Rivera, the muralist who was a Mexican national hero. She had known him since childhood and when he divorced his second wife, they embarked on a violent courtship.

In the style of [Artist Name]: The work may be ascribed to the artist on the basis of style, but there may be some question as to actual authorship.

Please use photos as part of the description. The absence of condition report does not guarantee excellent condition. Please contact us for an in-hand evaluation or for additional photos.
Condition
Painting is in overall excellent condition. No visible rips, tears or blemishes. Image and signature are bold, vibrant and display very well.

The antique frame has many chips and cracks. The gesso is falling off in places -- frame will likely continue to deteriorate during transport. The value is in the painting, not the frame.
