H.G. Wells Signed 1st Ed. "God the Invisible King", Unique Foray into Religion
A signed copy of "God the Invisible King" by H.G. Wells. London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1917. First edition, octavo, xvii, 206pp. Signed on the half-title page: "with the compliments of H.G. Wells." A naval cloth-bound volume, with numerous pencil notations throughout by a previous owner. The binding is faded from sun damage, with additional soiling and dampstaining. Bumped corners and spine edges. Light toning to internal pages. Boldly signed by Wells.
Wells' "God the Invisible King" was a new foray into theology for the author and "was so different from what Wells normally wrote that most people did not know how to handle it." Wells would go on to say that the book was written to convey "as forcibly and exactly as possible the religious belief of the writer", and he expressly distinguished his religious beliefs from those of Christianity. The work ultimately led to a lunch meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury.
